From 21 June 2021, On Board Diagnostics testing system (OBD) will be used during an NCT inspection. It will scan your vehicle for its Vehicle Identification Number, the Odometer Reading, the Electronic Braking System and the Anti-lock Braking System. It will be introduced on a phased basis and it will be fully operational from early 2022.

The NCT is conducted every 2 years for vehicles younger than 10 years and vehicles that are being presented for their 10th anniversary inspection or older than 10 years must undergo an annual inspection.

  • Brake pads, shoes and discs
  • Exhaust condition
  • Handbrake action
  • Fluids; including engine oil, brake fluid, anti-freeze, screen wash and power steering fluid
  • Battery condition, level and voltage
  • Suspension and steering – control arm brushes, track rod ends and gaiters
  • Shock absorber condition
  • Lights and horn are in full working order
  • Wiper blades and drive belt are in good condition
  • Chassis and underbody
  • Glass and mirrors
  • Transmission
  • Interior
  • Fuel system
